"How I Became A K9 Commando"

How I Became a K9 Commando is a children's book about SOF Dogs.  Proceeds from the purchase of this book will help fund Phase 3 of the SOF K-9 Memorial, which will honor fallen handlers and continue to tell the story of Special Operations Forces K-9s.

It can be purchased at:

  • Amazon
  • Airborne & Special Operations Museum

...A story about a Dutch-born puppy and her journey to become a member of the greatest fighting force in the world …Learn about adversity, dedication, gratitude, love, and sacrifice through the eyes of a Special Operations Forces K-9.

The story is about a dog named Patty, who talks about her Dutch upbringing and how she “tried out” for the most elite military unit in the world and made it! She explains her specialized training and how she was injured in the war, her recovery and her retirement. She also talks about biting bad guys….YES! She wants everyone to know that she is doing her job and maybe a bite is not as bad as a bullet? She also talks about sacrifice, gratitude, and death.

About the Author

Laura Miller served as a veterinary technician for 26 years with the US Army, with the last ten years dedicated to taking care of SOF Dogs.  She is the President of the SOF K9 Memorial Foundation, which she cofounded in 2010 to acknowledge the sacrifice and loss felt by all of the SOF community when a dog was killed or missing in action.

About the Illustrators

Amanda Coman-Casserleigh has been a portrait and multi-media artist for 20 + years. Amanda now resides in Columbus, Ohio with her husband, 2 children, 2 dogs and cat.

Naomi Coman started this project when she was 13 years old and is currently a freshman in High School. Her favorite subject is art and in her free time writes short stories. She hopes to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design after graduation.

*Although we are certain that our SOF K9 community will love this book, we ask that if you purchase this book on Amazon that you leave a review.  We understand that war, bites, "trauma" and death may not suite all parents and would like to ensure that the general public is aware of the content and that it comes from readers, not just the author.

Thank you for you ongoing support!
